Indochina Trek

Do I need trekking experience?

You need to be able to walk for five or six hours on two or three consecutive days, including climbs. If you walk 10 to 15 kilometres on hills at home without trouble, grade 2 routes are within reach. Grade 3 routes add one or two days with 700 to 800 metres of climbing.

Can we carry only a daypack?

Yes on every route. Your main bag travels by vehicle or stays at the start hotel, depending on the route. Porters can be arranged on request.

Are the treks shared with other travellers?

No. Every trek is private to your party, from one traveller up to eight.

Which month should we choose?

For northern Vietnam, September to November and March to April are the dry, clear windows. For Laos and Mondulkiri, November to February. July and August fall in the rainy season in all three regions. The trekking seasons page has the month-by-month chart.

Read in full: Indochina Trek.

Treks

Why is there no price on the trek pages?

Because the price per person depends mainly on how many of you share the guides and vehicles, and every trek is private. We quote per trip after you send dates and party size.

Can a trek be shortened by a day?

Usually yes. Sa Pa and Pu Luong each have a day that can be dropped. Hoang Su Phi and Nam Ha lose their reason to exist if shortened, and we will say so.

Can children join?

Teenagers who walk regularly manage grade 1 and 2 routes. We do not recommend grade 3 routes for children, and we discuss younger children case by case.

Sapa Valleys Trek 4 days

How do we get to Sa Pa for the start?

Most people take the overnight train from Hanoi to Lao Cai and a road transfer up to Sa Pa, or a bus or private car the whole way. Sa Pa is about 250 km from Hanoi. We can include a private transfer as an option.

Is this trek crowded?

Day one through Lao Chai and Ta Van is the busiest part of the valley, and you will meet other groups. Days two and three, towards Ban Ho and Nam Toong, see far fewer walkers.

What happens if it rains heavily?

Your guide switches the ridge section on day two to a lower path and, if needed, shortens day three. If a landslide closes the road out on day four, the vehicle meets you at a different point.

Can we do it in three days?

Yes, by dropping the Nam Toong loop on day three and walking out from Ban Ho that day. You lose the quietest walking of the trek.

Hoang Su Phi Trek 5 days

When are the terraces golden?

Usually in the second half of September into early October, for two to three weeks. In 2025 the harvest came early and was over by the end of September. We check with families on the route before confirming a harvest date.

Is this the Ha Giang Loop?

No. The loop is a road circuit through the karst plateau in the east of the old province. This trek is in Hoang Su Phi in the west, and it is done on foot.

Do we need a border permit?

Parts of Hoang Su Phi lie in the land border area, where foreigners need a provincial police permit and advance notice to the border guard. We arrange it from your passport details.

Can we start from Ha Giang town instead of Hanoi?

Yes, if you are already in the region. It shortens the first and last days' drives, and we adjust the quote.

Pu Luong & Mai Chau Trek

Is Pu Luong hot?

Warmer than Sa Pa or Hoang Su Phi, because the villages are lower. From May to August open terraces are hot by late morning; we start walking early in those months and shorten midday stretches.

Can we skip Mai Chau and spend more time in Pu Luong?

Yes. Drop day one and add a loop day in Pu Luong instead. You lose the flattest walking and gain a quieter village night.

Is this trek suitable for teenagers?

Teenagers who walk regularly manage it well. Day three is the one to judge them by: 14 kilometres and about 650 metres of climb.

When are the terraces green or golden here?

Green from early summer, ripening in September and October depending on the valley. Families on the route tell us each year how the crop is running before we confirm dates.

Nam Ha Forest Trek 3 days

How do we get to Luang Namtha?

By air (the airport is about 6 km south of town), by road, or by the Laos–China railway, which has a station at Na Teuy in Luang Namtha province. We can arrange the transfer from Na Teuy.

Can we trek in Nam Ha without a guide?

We only run it with local guides, as the protected area's tourism model intends. Villages close to roads can be visited independently, but the forest routes are not marked.

How cold are the nights?

Luang Namtha town sits at 552 metres and has recorded 0.4 °C in December. Village nights in December and January are cold; bring a warm layer and we supply blankets.

Is it possible in the rainy season?

Yes, but expect mud, leeches and slower days. We advise November to February and avoid booking July and August.

Mondulkiri Forest Trek 3 days

Will we see gibbons?

Often you hear them; seeing them depends on where the group is that morning and on the weather. The camp works with habituated groups, which improves the odds, but nobody can promise a sighting.

Is this a homestay?

No. You sleep at a community-run forest camp. It is the only trek on our list without family-house nights.

How hot is it?

Days are warm all year and humid under the canopy. The cooler, drier months are November to February; the rain falls mostly from June to October.

How do we get to Sen Monorom?

By road from Phnom Penh. We can arrange a private transfer, or you can arrive independently and meet your guide in Sen Monorom.

Trek prices

Why does your quote cost more than a group trek in Sa Pa town?

Because it is private, it carries two guides, and it includes the village tickets and transfers. A shared walk sold in town divides one guide among many people and often covers a single day.

Is a solo traveller's price much higher?

Per person, yes, because a guide and a vehicle cost the same for one as for two. The quote shows the full figure so you can decide.

Do prices change after we book?

The quote we confirm is the price you pay, unless you change the trip. Government fees that change before travel are the only exception, and the booking terms explain that.

How do we pay?

By bank transfer or card through a payment link. Your quotation lists the methods and the steps to avoid payment fraud.

Read in full: Trek prices.

How to book

How far ahead should we book?

For the late-September harvest weeks and Lunar New Year, two to three months ahead. Otherwise three to four weeks is usually enough, with passport details at least a week before a border-area trek.

Why do you need our passport details?

Vietnamese homestays must register foreign guests with the commune police, and border-area routes need a provincial police permit. Both are done from passport details.

Can we book a trek starting tomorrow?

Sometimes, for Sa Pa or Pu Luong outside peak weeks. Not for Hoang Su Phi, because the border-area paperwork needs time.

Read in full: How to book.

Regions

Which region is least visited?

Of the regions where we run fixed treks, Hoang Su Phi sees the fewest foreign walkers. Phongsaly sees fewer still, but we only plan it on request.

Which region is closest to Hanoi?

Mai Chau and Pu Luong. Sa Pa is about 250 km from Hanoi and Hoang Su Phi about 300 km.

Can we trek in Vietnam and Laos on one trip?

Yes, but allow for travel days between them. There are few direct connections between the Vietnamese and Lao trekking areas.

Read in full: Regions.

Sa Pa

Is Sa Pa too touristy for trekking?

The town is busy and the first valley day is shared with many walkers. Beyond Ta Van, towards Ban Ho and Nam Toong, the paths are much quieter.

Can it snow in Sa Pa?

Yes. Snow has fallen in the town on several occasions in recent decades, in the coldest weeks of winter. It is rare and does not last.

Do we need a permit to trek around Sa Pa?

No special permit for the valleys we walk. There are village entrance tickets, which our trek includes, and your homestay registers you with the commune police.

Is Fansipan part of the trek?

No. Fansipan is a separate climb. Our Sa Pa trek stays in the valleys and villages below the town.

Read in full: Sa Pa.

Ha Giang

Is Hoang Su Phi part of the Ha Giang Loop?

No. The loop runs through the karst plateau in the east of the old province. Hoang Su Phi is in the west, outside the geopark.

Is Ha Giang still a province?

Since 1 July 2025 it has been merged into Tuyen Quang province. The name Ha Giang is still used for the area and the town.

Do we need a permit?

For land border areas, foreigners need a provincial police permit under Decree 34/2014. Parts of Hoang Su Phi are in that area; we arrange it for our treks.

When are the terraces flooded?

Usually in late spring and early summer, before and just after planting, when the fields fill with water. Timing varies with rain and altitude.

Pu Luong & Mai Chau

Is Pu Luong better than Sa Pa?

Different. Pu Luong is lower, warmer, closer to Hanoi and quieter away from a few hotspots. Sa Pa has higher mountains and a longer trekking tradition.

Which province is Mai Chau in now?

Since July 2025 Mai Chau has been part of the new Phu Tho province. It was previously in Hoa Binh.

Can we swim in Pu Luong?

Some stream pools and waterfalls are used for swimming in the dry, warm months. Ask your guide; after heavy rain the water is fast and brown.

Is Pu Luong suitable for families?

It is the gentlest of our Vietnam regions. Teenagers who walk regularly do well on our four-day route.

Luang Namtha

Do we need a guide to trek in Nam Ha?

The protected area's treks are led by trained local guides, and that is how we run ours. Villages near the roads can be visited independently, but forest routes are not marked.

How do we get from Luang Prabang to Luang Namtha?

By train to Na Teuy station on the Laos–China railway and a road transfer, or by bus, which takes a long day on mountain roads. Check current timetables.

Is it cold?

December and January nights are cold; the town has recorded 0.4 °C in December. Days are mild. Bring a warm layer for village nights.

Can we combine Nam Ha with Phongsaly?

Yes, with time. Phongsaly is further north and a long travel day away. We plan that combination on request for trips of a week or more.

Read in full: Luang Namtha.

Route table

Are the distances GPS-measured?

No. They are planning estimates measured on maps, marked as estimates everywhere they appear. Real distances can differ by a kilometre or two on a day, and a guide may reroute a section.

Which route is the hardest?

Hoang Su Phi, because it has three consecutive climbing days of 600 to 800 metres. Nam Ha has the same peak climb but over fewer days, on rougher paths.

Which route is the easiest?

Pu Luong and Mai Chau by climb and surface. Mondulkiri has the least climbing but the most heat.

Why is Phongsaly on the table without numbers?

Because we plan it per trip rather than running a fixed route. The access days vary with where you come from.

Packing list

Boots or trail shoes?

Trail shoes with deep soft-rubber lugs suit most people on our routes: they grip wet clay and dry overnight. Boots help weak ankles but stay wet longer.

Do homestays provide bedding?

Yes: a mattress, a mosquito net and blankets. A sleeping-bag liner is still a good idea for comfort and hygiene.

Can we leave luggage somewhere?

Yes. On every route your main bag stays at the start hotel or travels by vehicle. You walk with a daypack.

Do we need leech socks?

On Nam Ha and Mondulkiri after rain, yes. On the Vietnam routes they help in July and August. They are cheap and light.

Trekking seasons

When are the rice terraces golden?

In northern Vietnam, from mid-September into early October, for two to three weeks per valley. In 2025 Hoang Su Phi's harvest came early and ended in late September.

Is winter too cold for homestays?

Cold, not too cold. Sa Pa averages 6.2 °C at night in January and houses are unheated, but hosts give thick blankets. Bring a warm layer to sleep in.

What is the driest month for Laos trekking?

February, closely followed by January, around Luang Namtha. Both average about 25 mm of rain.

Should we avoid Lunar New Year?

Not necessarily, but some homestays close for family celebrations and transport is busy. Tell us your dates and we check availability.

About

Do you run group departures?

No. Every trek is private to your party, from one to eight walkers. We do not mix strangers into a group.

Who are the guides?

An English-speaking trek guide for logistics and safety, and a local guide from the area on village and forest paths. On Nam Ha the local guides come from the guide service; in Mondulkiri they are Bunong community guides.

Why don't you show customer reviews?

Because readers cannot check reviews hosted on a company's own site. Ask us your questions directly and we answer them in writing.
