Most people who say Ha Giang mean the Dong Van karst plateau in the east, a UNESCO Global Geopark crossed by motorbike loops. This trek goes the other way. Hoang Su Phi, on the western side next to the Chinese border, is earth rather than limestone, and its hillsides are cut into rice terraces that were recognised as a national heritage site in 2012 and now cover more than 3,700 hectares across eight communes.
It is the hardest route we run. Three consecutive days each carry 600 to 800 metres of climbing on terrace paths, and the drives at each end are long: Hoang Su Phi is about 300 kilometres from Hanoi, close to six hours by road. It suits walkers who already do full hill days at home and who want terraces without a single other tour group in sight.
Day by day
Day 1
Hanoi to Hoang Su Phi, evening walk
Pick-up from your Hanoi hotel at 07:00. The road climbs north through Tuyen Quang; with stops for lunch and coffee the drive takes most of the day.
If you arrive before 16:30, a short walk through the terraces around Thong Nguyen loosens the legs before dinner in your first homestay.
Day 2
Thong Nguyen up to Nam Khoa
The first full view across the terraced bowl below Nam Khoa
The first long climb. The path rises from the valley through terraces and scattered houses, then through patches of forest, with water channels running alongside for much of the way.
Nam Khoa sits high on the slope; the family you stay with farms the terraces below the house.
Day 3
Nam Khoa to Ta Su Choong
A day of contouring and climbing between communes on paths used by farmers and their buffalo. Lunch is taken in a village house if one is open, or packed if not.
Like the other villages on this route, Ta Su Choong has no strip of guesthouses; you stay with a farming family and eat what they eat.
Day 4
Ta Su Choong to Ban Phung
The descent towards Ban Phung, at about 1,200 metres, passes the terraces photographers come for. In late September they may be gold; in June they may be full of water reflecting the sky; in other months they are green or bare stubble.
Day 5
Ban Phung out to the road, drive to Hanoi
An early start for a descending walk to the road, where the vehicle collects you around 10:00. The return drive brings you to Hanoi in the evening, usually between 18:00 and 20:00.
Distances, climbs and times are planning estimates from maps. Commune names here are the ones villagers use; some communes were merged and renamed in Vietnam's 2025 reorganisation.
How hard it is, in numbers
| Day | Distance | Climb | Walking time | Surface |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 4 km | 150 m | 1.5 h | terrace dykes |
| 2 | 13 km | 800 m | 6–7 h | terrace steps, forest path |
| 3 | 14 km | 750 m | 6–7 h | terrace paths, stream crossings |
| 4 | 12 km | 600 m | 5–6 h | terrace paths, long descent |
| 5 | 6 km | 150 m | 2 h | farm track |
Grade 3 on our route scale means at least two days with 700 metres or more of climbing. Here there are two such days back to back, with a third close behind. Terrace paths are narrow: in places you walk on the earth wall between two flooded fields, which is fine when dry and slow when wet. Good footwear matters more than fitness on day three; see the packing list.
The homestay nights on this route
Houses here take few guests and are not set up as guesthouses. You sleep on mattresses on the upper floor or in a side room, with blankets supplied. Bathrooms vary from a tiled shower with a gas heater to a concrete washroom with a bucket. A 2025 press report put an evening meal, breakfast and a bed at about 500,000 VND per guest in Hoang Su Phi; that cost is in our price, but it shows what the household earns from you.
Meals are cooked over a wood fire: rice, pork, eggs, greens from the garden, sometimes river fish. Corn wine is offered with dinner. Vegetarians eat well with notice; vegans should expect a narrow menu of rice, tofu, greens and peanuts.

Who this trek is not for
- First-time trekkers. Start with Pu Luong or Sa Pa and come back for this one.
- Anyone who dislikes long drives. By our estimate, twelve to thirteen hours of the five days are spent in a vehicle.
- Travellers set on the Dong Van loop, Ma Pi Leng and the karst plateau. That is the other side of the province and a different trip.
- Anyone coming specifically for golden rice who cannot move their dates. The ripe window is two to three weeks and shifts from year to year.
Paperwork and rules on this route
Hoang Su Phi borders China. Under Vietnam's Decree 34/2014 on land border areas, foreigners entering a border area need a permit from the provincial police, the organisation taking them in must notify the police and the border guard at least 24 hours ahead, and overnight stays must be registered, with written notice to the border post for stays inside the border belt. Where our route enters such an area we handle all of this, which is why we need passport scans at least a week before departure.
Since 1 July 2025 the former Ha Giang province has been merged into Tuyen Quang province. Signs, maps and permits may show either name for a while.

Common questions
Questions travellers ask most
When are the terraces golden?
Usually in the second half of September into early October, for two to three weeks. In 2025 the harvest came early and was over by the end of September. We check with families on the route before confirming a harvest date.
Is this the Ha Giang Loop?
No. The loop is a road circuit through the karst plateau in the east of the old province. This trek is in Hoang Su Phi in the west, and it is done on foot.
Do we need a border permit?
Parts of Hoang Su Phi lie in the land border area, where foreigners need a provincial police permit and advance notice to the border guard. We arrange it from your passport details.
Can we start from Ha Giang town instead of Hanoi?
Yes, if you are already in the region. It shortens the first and last days' drives, and we adjust the quote.
